EMPOWERTECH APPOINTS NEW BOARD CHAIR

Accomplished Independent Entertainment Professional and Former Broadcast Media and Non-Profit Executive, Whitney Trilling, to Focus on Fundraising, Staffing & Students

SEPTEMBER , 2010—LOS ANGELES: EmpowerTech, a Los Angeles-based non-profit organization that provides computer training to persons with physical and developmental disabilities, announced the appointment of Whitney Trilling as Chairperson of the EmpowerTech Board of Directors. Ms. Trilling has served on Empowertech’s Board since April, 2010 and will chair the Board for a one-year term.

In addition to a successful career in performing arts and entertainment manager, Ms. Trilling has founded and run non-profit organizations and worked as a broadcast media manager for national news programs. She is also a graduate of EmpowerTech’s Blind and Low Vision program.

Whitney Trilling commented, “I am excited to expand my role at EmpowerTech and look forward to addressing what I feel are critically important challenges facing our organization. Like all non-profits, EmpowerTech has been impacted by the economic recession. My top priority, therefore, will be to redouble our fundraising efforts and build a solid organizational foundation through the recruitment of additional board members and volunteers. I recognize that this will not be easy, but with our exceptional administrators and instructors, and our very committed Board of Directors, I am confident we can make this incredible community resource even stronger and more effective than it already is.”

EmpowerTech is the only Assistive Technology center serving the 1.8 million people living with disabilities in Los Angeles County. According to a Public Policy Institute of California study, people with disabilities have disproportionately low incomes, are underemployed and have access to fewer mainstream resources.

Joan Anderson, EmpowerTech Executive Director commented, “I can think of no person better suited to guide EmpowerTech than Whitney Trilling. Her portfolio of business and non-profit success, and the intimate knowledge of EmpowerTech’s inner workings she gained as both a student and a Board member, give her a unique perspective that will be invaluable to the organization during this difficult economic period."

Through its T.R.A.D.E, Blind and Low Vision, pre-school, and Open Access programs, EmpowerTech provides >training and assistive technology to anyone who needs it, from blind/low-vision adults to disabled children. For these members of the community, basic tasks that most people take for granted such as accessing and using the Internet, creating and reading documents, or simply learning and communicating through online and computer-based resources, hold the key to independence, and achieving educational and employment goals.
